Northbound commuters on the Baltimore‑Washington Parkway (MD‑295) got an unwelcome surprise Wednesday when Maryland state troopers shut down multiple lanes near the MD‑175 interchange in Jessup to investigate a reported road‑rage confrontation that may have involved a gun. The closures choked off the morning rush and sent traffic crawling for more than two miles.
Maryland State Police said a preliminary review indicated the incident may have involved a firearm, with police activity focused on the northbound lanes near MD‑175 in the Jessup area, according to DC News Now. The outlet reported backups stretching over two miles as troopers worked the scene. Authorities had not immediately said whether anyone was hurt.
Highway gun crimes already on state police radar
The Maryland Department of State Police has a Highway Gun Crimes Initiative that investigators say has already handled several armed road‑rage cases this year and secured arrests, according to a state press release. The agency’s public advisories routinely urge anyone who witnesses these kinds of confrontations to contact investigators at 410‑538‑1887, per the Maryland State Police.
Highway flare‑ups fit a troubling pattern
The shutdown in Jessup is the latest in a string of violent run‑ins on busy Baltimore‑area roads. Earlier this month, a fatal shooting tied to an apparent road‑rage clash ground traffic to a halt around Towson Circle, as reported in a story on a fatal Towson road‑rage shutdown, and a March road‑rage shooting temporarily closed part of Perring Parkway in Parkville, according to WBAL.
Legal note
Under Maryland law, using a firearm while committing a felony or other crime of violence is a separate offense, and prosecutors can file weapons counts on top of charges such as assault. The statute covering the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime is detailed in the Maryland criminal code.
Troopers remained on scene as the investigation continued and said additional details would be released as the case develops. Drivers were warned to brace for possible follow‑up disruptions in the Jessup area while investigators finish their work.
