A routine afternoon at the downtown Chico branch of the Butte County Library turned deadly yesterday when a gunman opened fire inside, killing two adults and injuring a child. Officers rushed to the Sherman Avenue building around 5 p.m., quickly taking a suspect into custody outside and telling residents there was no ongoing threat to the public. The busy branch, a regular stop for families, students, and kids’ programs, was cleared out as stunned patrons and staff were escorted to safety.
What officials say
Chico Police said dispatchers heard gunfire and people screaming over an open 911 call, prompting the urgent response. Investigators later recovered a single firearm at the scene. Authorities confirmed that two adults were killed and that one child suffered what officials described as a minor injury. Police said the suspect acted alone and was taken into custody without incident, according to CBS Sacramento.
Library and community
The shooting unfolded at the Chico branch listed by the Butte County Library at 1108 Sherman Ave, a hub that regularly hosts storytimes, study sessions, and family-friendly events that draw visitors from across the county. As of Monday evening, officials had not released a public statement from the library system. Community leaders and library advocates are expected to organize support for shaken patrons and staff as they process what happened inside a place many consider a safe community refuge.
Investigation underway
The Chico Police Department is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI. Officials said no officers fired their weapons during the response and no law enforcement personnel were injured. Police have not identified a motive and say the investigation remains active, with additional details reported by CBS Sacramento.
Chico Police are asking anyone who was in or around the library at the time of the shooting, or who may have information about the suspect or the events leading up to the attack, to contact the department’s tip line. Authorities say more updates will be released as detectives continue to develop the case.
