A deadly cluster of suspected drug overdoses rocked the H Street NE corridor Thursday afternoon, leaving one person dead and sending at least seven others to area hospitals, according to authorities. Emergency crews arriving on the busy stretch found multiple people unconscious along the corridor and treated several at the scene before transporting others.
As reported by WJLA, officers were called to the 900 to 1400 block of H Street NE around 1:45 p.m. They found seven people receiving care for suspected overdoses and an eighth person who was unresponsive and later pronounced dead at the scene by DC Fire and EMS. The victim's name has not been released, and authorities said the substance involved remains unknown. The Metropolitan Police Department said the investigation is ongoing.
H Street's recent drug enforcement and risks
The H Street corridor has already been on law enforcement and public health radar in recent months. In April, federal prosecutors said they had dismantled a storefront fentanyl operation on the 700 block, a case detailed in Hoodline's reporting on the storefront fentanyl operation. The bust highlighted how potent synthetic opioids have been circulating in the neighborhood and underscored the risks for people using drugs in the area.
Harm-reduction resources and advice
District health officials continue to stress that residents have access to harm-reduction tools that can save lives. The DC Department of Behavioral Health notes that naloxone kits and fentanyl test strips are available throughout the city, and residents can text "LiveLongDC" to 888-811 to arrange pick-up or mail delivery. A health advisory from the CDC reports that medetomidine has been increasingly detected in illicit opioid supplies and may prolong respiratory depression. Even so, public health guidance continues to urge people to administer naloxone and call 911 whenever someone is not breathing or is unresponsive.
Investigation continues
Police say the case remains under active investigation, and officials have not released additional details about the seven people taken to hospitals or the identity of the person who died, according to WJLA. This story will be updated as authorities provide more information.
