A routine warrant check in Dobbins Heights turned into a major bust on Tuesday, when deputies arrested a Hamlet man and booked him on 45 separate charges. The 37-year-old is accused of a mix of theft and fraud offenses, along with stalking allegations, and is being held without bond at the Richmond County Jail. Local law enforcement described the arrest as standard warrant service that happened to reveal a long list of active cases.
According to Queen City News, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Thaao Tohave Short, 37, of Hamlet. Deputies say they picked him up on Dale Peterkin Street in Dobbins Heights on June 16. Short faces 45 counts in all, including four misdemeanor larceny charges, three counts of larceny of a firearm, six counts of identity theft and two counts of financial card theft.
Charges at a glance
Beyond the misdemeanor larceny accusations, deputies say the case involves several alleged identity theft schemes and multiple weapon-related thefts among the 45 counts, along with stalking-related charges. "I am proud of the professionalism and commitment our deputies demonstrate daily to keep Richmond County safe," Sheriff Mark B. Gulledge told Queen City News.
Where this fits locally
The arrest lands in the middle of a broader county push against property crime and financial fraud this spring. Recent local coverage has detailed copper-wire thefts and retail theft cases that have put extra attention on stolen goods and fraud investigations across Richmond County; see the Richmond County Daily Journal and WSOC-TV for recent examples.
What happens next
Short is being held at the Richmond County Jail without bond and is expected to appear in district court for an initial hearing, where prosecutors will determine how to proceed with formal filings and future court dates. As in every criminal case, he is presumed innocent until proven guilty and could see additional charges or changes to bond status as the investigation develops.
