A Thursday night drive through Harlem turned deadly when a 63-year-old SUV driver struck two teenagers riding a motorized scooter on West 112th Street, leaving a 13-year-old boy dead and a 14-year-old injured, police said. Authorities said the driver stayed at the scene and was not hurt.
Crash details
According to the New York Post, which cited NYPD accounts, the crash involved a Chevy Tahoe and unfolded just before 8:50 p.m. on West 112th Street. Police said the 13-year-old suffered a severe head injury and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The 14-year-old, who was also on the scooter, was treated for a leg injury and listed in stable condition. Investigators have not made any arrests and are working to reconstruct how the impact occurred at the intersection.
Rising scooter collisions this year
NYPD traffic data show that collisions involving stand-up scooters are climbing this year. The department's TrafficStat report for the week of June 8–14 lists stand-up scooter crashes up 125% year-to-date, with 9 reported incidents in 2026 compared with 4 at the same point in 2025. The trend has added fuel to existing worries about how scooters, cars and pedestrians share New York City streets. Authorities have not said whether speeding played a role in Thursday's collision, and officials noted that the precise type of scooter involved has not yet been confirmed.
Investigation ongoing
Detectives are still piecing together the moments leading up to the crash and are asking anyone with information or video of the incident to contact the NYPD, according to the New York Post. No charges have been announced as investigators work to clarify exactly how a routine turn onto a Harlem side street turned into a fatal collision.
