A Carson City man is facing an attempted murder charge after what authorities describe as a brutal attack on his domestic partner during a traffic stop in south Sacramento, an incident that left the woman hospitalized and a California Highway Patrol officer slightly injured.
CHP officials say the alleged assault happened on the evening of June 18 on State Route 99, just south of Dillard Road near Elk Grove. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Ricardo Gonzalez Gurrola of Carson City, Nevada, was taken into custody after a struggle and later arraigned Tuesday in Sacramento Superior Court.
According to FOX40, officers stopped the vehicle in south Sacramento after receiving reports of a violent incident on the highway. The outlet reports that the female victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment while investigators processed the scene.
Legal stakes are steep
Aggravated mayhem, one of the counts CHP says is under investigation, is punishable by life in prison with the possibility of parole under California law. Attempted murder can bring anything from several years to life behind bars, depending on whether prosecutors allege premeditation or special circumstances.
Under state law, Penal Code section 205 sets out the crime of aggravated mayhem and its penalty, according to California Legislative Information. How California handles attempted crimes is detailed in Penal Code section 664, with the statutory language available on Justia.
How the arrest unfolded
CHP officials say the alleged assault took place after 8 p.m. on June 18 along State Route 99 south of Dillard Road. When officers pulled the vehicle over, they say the stop quickly escalated, with Gurrola allegedly attempting to grab an officer’s firearm during the confrontation.
FOX40 reports that one CHP officer suffered minor injuries in the struggle. Gurrola was booked on multiple felony counts, including attempted murder and corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant.
What happens next
Prosecutors will now review the CHP investigation and decide what formal charges to file, along with any possible sentencing enhancements. The case is expected to return to court for further proceedings and a potential preliminary hearing.
If Gurrola is convicted, the punishment will hinge on the specific findings in court. Allegations such as premeditated attempted murder and aggravated mayhem carry the harshest penalties allowed under state law.
CHP says the investigation is ongoing and is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the department.
