A late-night walk in Pittsburgh's Homewood neighborhood turned deadly Thursday when a man was hit by multiple vehicles and killed near Bennett Street and Oakwood Street. First responders found him lying in the roadway around 11:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene and has not yet been identified. The crash shut down the block for hours and brought in the city's investigative unit.
According to CBS Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Public Safety said the driver of the SUV that first struck the man stayed at the scene and was described as "highly cooperative" with police. That driver told officers he had gotten out to check on the victim when a second vehicle hit the man again, the agency said. Public Safety described the second vehicle as a gray Toyota Prius whose driver left the scene, and investigators have been canvassing the area for witnesses and any available footage.
What investigators are reviewing
Pittsburgh Public Safety shared details of the crash on X, saying the city's Collision Investigation Unit was called in to process evidence. Investigators said their work includes reviewing nearby camera footage and any witness videos as they try to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the man's death.
Investigation status
The investigation was described as ongoing, and detectives have not announced any charges, according to CBS Pittsburgh. Officials said they are pursuing leads from physical evidence at the scene and camera footage, while the victim remains unidentified.
Neighborhood context
The fatal collision has reignited long-standing worries about pedestrian safety in Homewood, where the city has been pushing mobility and street-safety upgrades in recent years. The Homewood Active Mobility Improvement Plan outlines projects to upgrade sidewalks, lighting, and crosswalks along corridors that include Oakwood Street. Residents have also watched other emergency incidents unfold in the neighborhood, including a SWAT standoff earlier this month that closed a block and added to local alarm and calls for traffic calming measures; see barricaded man triggers heavy SWAT lockdown for more on that incident.
Police are asking anyone with information or video from the Bennett and Oakwood area to contact investigators. Tips can also be submitted through the city's public-safety channels, Pittsburgh Public Safety said on X. This story will be updated as officials release more details.
