A 10-year-old bicyclist was seriously hurt Friday after being hit by two vehicles while trying to cross State Road 52 near Victory Drive in the Bayonet Point area of Hudson. Emergency crews airlifted the child to a nearby hospital, and troopers said the injuries were serious. Both drivers were reported uninjured, and the Florida Highway Patrol said the crash is still under investigation.

According to FOX 13 Tampa Bay, the crash happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. Troopers told the outlet the child rode out of the Circle K parking lot at 7611 State Road 52 and into the westbound lanes. A 45-year-old Hudson woman driving a Kia SUV in the center lane struck the bicyclist, and the impact pushed the child into the path of a westbound Ford F-350 driven by a 35-year-old Riverview man. Investigators have not released the identities of anyone involved as the probe continues.

Where It Happened

The stretch of SR 52 through Hudson is a multi-lane arterial that the Florida Department of Transportation lists for resurfacing, ADA upgrades and corridor safety work, with construction and design details outlined on the FDOT project page. Local reporting has previously documented lane closures and collisions on SR 52, including traffic delays in New Port Richey that closed westbound lanes near Little Road in 2025 (westbound lanes near Little Road closed).

Why Florida Roads Can Be Dangerous for Cyclists

State data and reporting show bicycle fatalities have risen in recent years and are often concentrated on faster, multi-lane state roads where protected bike facilities are limited. A December investigation by WLRN found that Florida remains among the most dangerous states for bicyclists and that many serious crashes happen on high-speed corridors without continuous sidewalks or protected lanes.

Troopers told FOX 13 Tampa Bay that the child was flown to a local hospital and that no injuries were reported for either driver, and the crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not released additional details or the names of those involved. Hoodline will update this story if officials release more information.
