A late-night crash on eastbound Interstate 94 in Eau Claire left a 27-year-old woman from Eveleth, Minnesota, dead and a Brooklyn Park man in handcuffs on suspicion of operating while intoxicated. The pickup truck she was riding in veered off the highway late Monday, and investigators say the driver, who was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, was later arrested at the scene. A second passenger from St. Michael walked away unharmed, and the Wisconsin State Patrol says it is continuing to investigate what went wrong.
According to CBS Minnesota, troopers reported that the pickup left the roadway at about 10:30 p.m., went airborne, then came to rest in the median. The woman riding in the backseat suffered fatal injuries. CBS Minnesota also reports that officers noted signs of impairment in the driver, arrested him on suspicion of OWI, and said the victim’s name will be made public once her family has been notified. The State Patrol told the outlet that the investigation remains active.
Crash Scene And Response
The Wisconsin State Patrol told CBS Minnesota that the truck drifted off the traffic lane, vaulted, then landed in the median, a violent chain of events that killed the rear-seat passenger. First responders treated the Brooklyn Park driver at the scene before transporting him for medical evaluation, and he was then taken into custody. The front-seat passenger from St. Michael was not injured. Troopers stayed on scene collecting debris, documenting the layout of the crash, and said they are working to determine whether impairment was a factor.
How This Fits Into A Bigger Problem
Impaired driving remains a persistent safety problem on Wisconsin roads. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2024 report notes that alcohol-impaired crashes accounted for roughly one-third of the state’s traffic deaths, and its state table lists 595 total traffic fatalities in Wisconsin in 2024 with 197 involving alcohol impairment. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation points to enforcement pushes such as the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign and says troopers across the state receive continuing training to spot drug- and alcohol-impaired drivers. Those broader trends help explain why investigators emphasize field testing, toxicology work, and careful scene documentation whenever a serious crash may involve impairment.
Legal Stakes For The Driver
The Brooklyn Park man was arrested on suspicion of OWI, and investigators stress that an arrest alone does not guarantee that prosecutors will ultimately file charges. Any case will hinge on toxicology results and the findings in the State Patrol’s final report. Under Wisconsin law, causing a death while operating under the influence can lead to a charge of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, a felony offense under state statute. That law allows prosecutors to pursue significant penalties if a court finds a driver guilty, although investigators typically wait for lab results and a full case review by prosecutors before moving forward.
State Patrol officials say they plan to release more information as it becomes available and will identify the victim after her family has been notified. They are asking anyone who may have seen the crash or events leading up to it to contact the Wisconsin State Patrol. This story will be updated if authorities announce new details or file charges in the case.
