Kabuto Japanese Steakhouse has quietly disappeared from its University City strip mall perch, leaving dark windows, a locked door and a lot of confused regulars wondering when their go-to hibachi spot slipped away.
Online Listings Mark The Closure
According to CharlotteFive, Google’s business listing for the University City restaurant showed the location as “permanently closed” today. The outlet reported that it is not clear when the steakhouse actually stopped serving customers and noted that it had reached out to Kabuto for comment.
Other Kabuto Locations Still Open
The closure does not appear to be a total retreat from the Charlotte area. A Kabuto restaurant on Tyvola Road is still listed on the company’s Kabuto site, a Pineville-Matthews spot shows up on another Kabuto page, and a Lake Norman/Huntersville location is promoted on its own Kabuto website. Those listings give loyalists nearby options for hibachi and sushi while the University City storefront remains dark.
Space At Town Center Plaza Is Marketed As Available
The restaurant’s former home at Town Center Plaza is already being pitched to the next tenant. A commercial real estate listing for the center identifies the suite as “formerly Kabuto” and shows it as available for immediate lease, according to Crexi. The marketing materials highlight a restaurant-sized space that suggests Kabuto has fully vacated the unit.
Managers Offer Few Answers
Why the University City location went dark remains something of a mystery. A manager at the Tyvola Road Kabuto told CharlotteFive he was “not aware of the specific reasons” behind the closure. He added that each Kabuto restaurant is independently owned and operated, so a decision at one site does not necessarily signal trouble for the others.
What Customers Will Miss
The University City Kabuto had built a following with midweek half-price sushi nights, a budget-friendly draw for students and after-work crowds, according to the restaurant’s local page. That promotion still appears on archived versions of the site. For now, diners craving a familiar hibachi show or sushi roll will have to look to the remaining Charlotte-area locations or check the University City website for any future updates at Kabuto University.
