Trackhouse Entertainment Group has cleared its first big local hurdle. The racing and entertainment company secured Kannapolis City Council approval this week to annex roughly 20 acres for a new race-team facility expected to house research and development, maintenance and training operations. The annexation marks a major early step for the project and further concentrates motorsports engineering and shop work inside the Charlotte region's racing corridor. Officials have not yet released a construction schedule or detailed workforce projections.
According to the Charlotte Business Journal, the council signed off on annexing about 20 acres to accommodate a Trackhouse facility that will support research, development, maintenance and training. The Business Journal described the vote, published June 25, 2026, as the first formal step toward development on the parcel.
The City of Kannapolis' council page lists the June 22 meeting where annexations and other agenda items were considered, and the city posts recordings and agendas for council sessions online, per the City of Kannapolis. That schedule makes the council action part of the public record and gives residents a way to watch the discussion that led to the vote.
Trackhouse is the racing and entertainment company founded by Justin Marks. The organization grew quickly after buying Chip Ganassi Racing’s NASCAR assets in 2021 and has operated a major shop in the Concord/Mooresville area, the Charlotte Observer reported. The Kannapolis move would add another footprint for a team that has been expanding its technical and development work since that acquisition.
What It Means For Kannapolis
Kannapolis has been actively courting new projects as it reimagines former mill property and downtown parcels. The Millstone Village redevelopment will be anchored by a Harris Teeter as the city pushes mixed-use retail and housing. Local reporting also shows council attention this spring on the FY 2026-27 budget and infrastructure priorities that factor into attracting employers and larger projects, per Cabarrus Compass.
Next Steps
Annexation is typically an early legal step that allows the city to extend utilities and assign zoning. The city's planning and economic development pages outline the rezoning, site-plan review and incentive processes that come next, according to the City of Kannapolis Economic Development materials. Once formal site plans and permit filings appear, the public record should show a timetable, scope and any requests for public incentives.
The Charlotte Business Journal report did not include a company timetable or employment figures for the Kannapolis project, and Trackhouse and city officials did not immediately provide additional details beyond the council action. Residents and stakeholders will likely see more specifics as Trackhouse files site plans and the city processes zoning and utility work.
