Kemba Walker is officially back in the local game, this time with a whistle and a building key. On Friday, the former Hornets star cut the ribbon on the Kemba Walker Sports Academy in downtown Concord, a 54,000-square-foot youth sports hub that opened its doors with a full slate of tournaments and the first-ever Kemba Walker Invitational, scheduled for the weekend of June 27–28.
The building is built for volume: basketball, volleyball, strength training and film study for young athletes and traveling teams all under one roof. "This moment means everything to me," Walker said in a statement about launching the academy and using it to open doors for the next generation. According to Axios, the facility houses four full-size high school basketball courts, eight volleyball courts, a strength-and-conditioning center and dedicated space for performance analysis and film work, and more than 60 teams have already signed up for the inaugural Kemba Walker Invitational.
Inside The Academy
The floor plan reads like a tournament director’s wish list. Courts are lined up to handle multiple games at once or flip into volleyball setups and other configurations, so practices and competitions can roll side by side without stepping on each other’s toes. Per the venue’s event listing on ExposureEvents, the Invitational covers multiple age divisions and guarantees every team at least three games. The same event page lays out registration information, entry fees and travel and lodging resources for squads coming in from out of town.
Local Bookings And Community Use
The academy is already popping up on downtown Concord calendars and local tourism listings as a go-to spot for youth camps, skill clinics and community expos this summer. According to the venue page on Explore Cabarrus, the site is being pitched both for major tournaments and for homegrown programming, with dates already locked in across the season. Early listings from local clubs and event organizers suggest the building is on a fast track to becoming a regional hub for indoor youth sports.
Walker’s Return To The Charlotte Area
The new academy is the latest chapter in Walker’s return to the region after closing the book on his playing career and coming back to the Hornets in a staff role. The Charlotte Observer reported in 2024 that Walker joined the Hornets’ bench as a player enhancement coach, and the Concord facility extends that presence into hands-on youth development. Organizers say the academy will mix high-level travel tournaments with neighborhood clinics, giving top prospects exposure while still keeping space for local kids learning the basics.
The Kemba Walker Sports Academy is listed at 24 Spring Street SW in downtown Concord and appears alongside other local venues in regional directories.
