Sunday afternoon in Kīhei turned chaotic when a second-story condo balcony suddenly gave out, injuring six people and sending four of them straight to the ground. The structure collapsed at about 4:15 p.m. on June 14 in the 2000 block of South Kīhei Road, with two other people left trapped as the broken balcony came to rest on a rock wall. The injured group, four men and two women ages 34 to 53, reported everything from head, neck and back pain to scrapes and scratches.
Fire crews from Engine 6 and Ladder 14 rushed to the scene and used Ladder 14’s aerial device to reach the two people stranded on top of the wall, according to Maui Now. Responders treated multiple patients right there at the condo complex, and five of the six injured were taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment. A stretch of South Kīhei Road was shut down during the response as a safety precaution while crews worked the scene.
Storm Damage And Local Repairs
Kīhei’s south shore has already taken a beating this year. A March Kona low storm destroyed an oceanfront condo in the same general area, according to Hawaii News Now. The County of Maui has issued multiple press releases about continuing storm repairs and closures along South Kīhei Road, work that has been snarling traffic and limiting access in parts of town. That recent history of flooding and road damage helps explain why crews were already active in the corridor when this balcony came down.
What Officials Said And Next Steps
Initial coverage from Maui Now did not identify a cause for the collapse and credited the Maui Fire Department for the scene photo and early incident details. County or state investigators typically review structural failures of this kind, but no public findings were available in the first wave of reports. In the meantime, residents and visitors are being urged to respect detours and safety notices while emergency crews and building inspectors secure the site.
The County of Maui keeps current road-closure and emergency alerts on its website for the South Kīhei Road repair work, and motorists are advised to follow posted detours and budget extra travel time while repairs and emergency operations continue. This story will be updated as officials release more information about the cause of the collapse or any inspection results. Anyone with useful photos or eyewitness accounts is asked to contact the Maui Police Department or county emergency channels.
