A Saturday afternoon drive in northeast Las Vegas turned violent when a high-speed collision at East Lake Mead Boulevard and North Walnut Road sent five people to the hospital, at least one of them fighting for life. Police say the driver of an Infiniti tied to the crash has now been booked in absentia on reckless driving and child abuse charges. All occupants from both vehicles were rushed to University Medical Center’s trauma center, where several remained in serious condition.
Crash at Lake Mead and Walnut
According to investigators, the wreck unfolded around 1:22 p.m. when a 2011 Infiniti G heading west on Lake Mead slammed into a Nissan Pathfinder that was turning left on a flashing yellow arrow onto Walnut Road. The impact spun both vehicles and blasted debris into a nearby parking lot. Evidence left at the scene, witness statements and surveillance video all pointed to the Infiniti traveling at a high rate of speed, as reported by News3LV. Officers shut down lanes around the intersection while traffic detectives processed the scene.
Injuries and hospitalizations
Emergency medical crews transported everyone involved straight to UMC’s trauma center. The Nissan driver was treated for life-threatening injuries, while the Nissan passenger and a juvenile passenger were both listed in serious condition. The Infiniti’s driver also suffered serious injuries but, according to police, showed no signs of impairment at the time. A female passenger in the Infiniti had minor injuries, according to coverage by FOX5. Hospital staff have not released names or updated conditions beyond what was made public shortly after the crash.
Charges and legal context
While the driver remains hospitalized, police say he has been booked in absentia into the Clark County Detention Center on counts of reckless driving and child abuse, as reported by News3LV. Under Nevada law, reckless driving that causes substantial bodily harm can fall under NRS 484B.653, while child-abuse offenses are laid out in NRS chapter 200. Both sets of statutes allow for felony charges when serious injury is involved. Prosecutors and investigators are expected to lean heavily on crash reconstruction, medical reports and video evidence as the case develops.
Traffic impact and local context
The Regional Transportation Commission and city traffic crews alerted drivers that multiple directions at the intersection were blocked during the afternoon investigation, urging motorists to steer clear and use alternate routes, per KTNV. The case slots into a troubling series of recent collisions where prosecutors have added child-endangerment or child-abuse related counts after serious crashes; FOX5 reported a similar filing in March, a pattern that has caught the eye of traffic safety advocates as well as law enforcement.
What’s next
LVMPD traffic detectives are still piecing together the crash, reviewing physical evidence, interviewing witnesses and going through hospital records. Once that work is complete, they could present a full case to the Clark County District Attorney’s Office for formal charges. For now, the Infiniti driver remains booked in absentia and authorities have not yet announced an initial court date.
