A Lakeland man is headed to state prison for 35 years after investigators say he turned a local motel into the center of a human trafficking operation that preyed on teenage runaways. Marlon Jabbar Lowery, 47, received the prison term in early June following a multi-year investigation into exploitation at the motel, and authorities say the probe identified four female victims between the ages of 15 and 17.
According to a Facebook post by the Lakeland Police Department, Lowery, who is known by the nickname "Gucci," was sentenced last Friday, and was charged with four counts of human trafficking, four counts of sexual battery and four counts of lewd battery. The department’s post says detectives first responded in February 2023, when the Special Victims Unit was called about a sexual-battery report involving a 17-year-old. That follow-up led investigators to the motel operation and identified four female victims ages 15 to 17.
Court listings maintained by the State Attorney's Office show Lowery's case on the docket under CF23003891XX and reflect that related hearings and filings remain active. The court-status entries affirm that the matter traces back to a Lakeland police report filed in 2023 and that the State Attorney's Office is handling prosecution and scheduling.
How Investigators Say the Operation Worked
Police say detectives identified nine suspects who preyed on the victims, and that eight other people have been charged on counts ranging from human trafficking to unlawful sexual activity with a minor and soliciting for prostitution. Investigators told officers the victims were runaways before they were exploited and that social-service partners were involved in identifying and offering help to potential survivors.
Local Enforcement and Broader Context
Polk County agencies have stepped up undercover and interdiction work in recent years. A multi-agency sting in September 2025 arrested 246 suspects and identified multiple possible trafficking victims, the Polk County Sheriff's Office reported. State authorities and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement have likewise expanded reporting and victim-service resources, including the Florida Human Trafficking Hotline at 1‑855‑FLA‑SAFE, as part of a broader push to find and help survivors.
Legal Implications
The charges against Lowery include multiple human-trafficking and sexual-battery counts, and the 35-year prison term sends him into the state corrections system. Court records and the State Attorney's docket will show whether co-defendants are scheduled for trial or plea dates and what additional prosecutorial steps follow.
Anyone with information about this case or who suspects human trafficking is urged to contact local law enforcement, the Florida Human Trafficking Hotline at 1‑855‑FLA‑SAFE or the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1‑888‑373‑7888 for confidential assistance and referrals.
