
Blue Origin has broken ground on a new $80 million payload processing facility at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, a project officials say will support a growing number of national security, commercial, and NASA missions. The facility marks the latest piece of the company's rapidly expanding Space Coast footprint, arriving as the region's launch pace hits historic highs.
Set to span 120,000 square feet, the facility will include four large payload processing bays, two encapsulation bays, and four multi-manifest processing bays, according to WFTV. The outlet reports the building is expected to open in early 2028. FOX 35 Orlando first reported the groundbreaking, noting officials describe the $80 million investment as necessary to keep pace with rising demand across national security, commercial, and NASA missions.
A Federal Contract Years in the Making
The facility traces back to a $78.25 million Commercial Solutions Opening contract the U.S. Space Force awarded Blue Origin to build the processing site on base property, according to Air & Space Forces Magazine. The magazine reported the investment is designed to let Cape Canaveral support up to 16 additional missions per year, including 7 to 8 national security launches. NASA has since added its own stake in the project. The agency announced on August 17 that it selected Blue Origin, along with All Points Logistics, Firefly Aerospace, and L3Harris Technologies, under an on-ramp provision to its Spacecraft Processing Operations Contract — a multi-award vehicle with a $100 million aggregate ceiling running through February 2033, per NASA's announcement. That deal ties the new Cape Canaveral facility directly into civil space prelaunch processing work, not just military and commercial missions.
Why the Space Coast Needed More Room
The push for more processing capacity reflects a genuine bottleneck on the range. Air & Space Forces Magazine reported that combined annual launches across Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg Space Force Bases surged from under 20 in 2020 to a projected 220 in 2025. Brevard County itself set a regional record with 109 orbital launches in 2025, a pace that has strained infrastructure across local pads and support facilities, according to Orlando Sentinel reporting.
That congestion has prompted coordination well beyond Blue Origin's own construction projects. Space Florida, the U.S. Space Force, and Port Canaveral have been developing concepts for a dedicated commercial space waterfront basin meant to separate rocket recovery operations from cruise and cargo port traffic, as Hoodline reported in its piece on the rocket basin gridlock plan.
Bigger Pads, Bigger Factory, Bigger Bets
The payload facility is only one piece of a much larger buildout. Blue Origin announced on August 12 that it had begun construction on Launch Complex 36B, a second pad designed for its heavy-lift New Glenn 9x4 vehicle, featuring a 700-foot-tall launch tower built with 2,500 tons of steel, the company said. That expansion follows Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis's announcement of “Project Horizon,” a $600 million initiative involving an 830,000-square-foot upper-stage manufacturing plant at Rocket Park in Cape Canaveral, expected to create 500 jobs paying an average annual salary over $98,000, according to Manufacturing Dive.
Taken together, Blue Origin's footprint in Florida now spans 11 sites across Brevard and Orange counties, representing more than $3 billion in infrastructure investment and employing nearly 4,000 workers in Brevard County alone, Insurance Journal reported. Pad Repairs Continue After Explosion
The expansion comes as Blue Origin works through the aftermath of a setback earlier this year. A New Glenn static-fire test explosion on May 28 damaged Launch Complex 36A at Cape Canaveral, and Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp identified a malfunctioning main oxygen valve as the cause, according to Venture Atlas. The incident prompted engine retrofits alongside pad reconstruction, work that is unfolding alongside the new payload facility and the LC-36B groundbreaking.
For now, Blue Origin is simultaneously rebuilding damaged launch infrastructure and adding new capacity, a balancing act playing out against a Space Coast launch cadence that shows no signs of slowing. The payload processing facility's targeted early 2028 opening puts it on track to arrive just as the region's next wave of national security, commercial, and NASA missions ramps up.
