A late-night run on Lake Erie turned dangerous Thursday when a 37-foot boat slammed into the break wall across from Burke Lakefront Airport, sending four people to the hospital, including a child with a head injury. Coast Guard crews rushed in, pulled all 10 people aboard to safety, and brought them back to North Coast Harbor, where emergency medical teams were standing by. The boat began taking on water after the impact, and the owner later lined up a local salvage company to recover the vessel. Officials reported no pollution from the crash.
Coast Guard Rushes Passengers Back To North Coast Harbor
The trouble call hit the Coast Guard's Eastern Great Lakes watchstanders at 11:52 p.m. Station Cleveland Harbor sent out a 29-foot Response Boat-Small, which reached the scene at about 12:32 a.m. The crew moved all 10 passengers off the damaged boat and onto their response vessel, then headed for North Coast Harbor so EMS crews could take over. Responders triaged multiple people on the water before turning them over to shore-based medical teams, according to Cleveland 19.
Injuries, Salvage And Crew Praise
Four people were hurt in the collision, including a child who sustained a head wound and was evaluated by emergency medical services at North Coast Harbor. The Coast Guard said the 37-foot vessel was taking on water, and the owner arranged for a local salvage company to recover the boat. There were no reports of pollution linked to the incident. "We could not be more proud of the job our crew did," Chief Petty Officer Adrian Ledesma said, praising the team's technical skills and on-the-spot triage work, as reported by Cleveland 19.
Why Break Walls Can Be Treacherous
Break walls and basin entrances like the one off Burke Lakefront can kick up tricky waves, swirling currents, and shallow spots that are especially risky at night. The East Basin break wall and North Coast Harbor sit inside regulated navigation and safety areas monitored by the Coast Guard. Boaters are expected to follow local notices and any active safety zones described in 33 CFR 165.939. Station Cleveland Harbor maintains small-boat response crews along the downtown lakefront and functions as the Coast Guard's local rescue hub, according to U.S. Coast Guard Station Cleveland Harbor.
Boating Safety Reminders
Authorities stress familiar basics for anyone heading out on the water: wear life jackets, file a float plan, steer clear of break walls at night, and check conditions before departure. The Coast Guard's Boating Safety division publishes guidance and statistics on life jacket use and float planning at U.S. Coast Guard Boating Safety.
Salvage operations were handled by the boat's owner and local crews, and officials plan to review the incident. For now, the Coast Guard is crediting its fast response with getting everyone off the damaged vessel safely.
