A late-night fire tore through a bakery in Bensonhurst on Friday, jolting one of the neighborhood’s busiest commercial strips and drawing a major FDNY response to 1476 86th Street. Firefighters battled the flames well into the early morning before getting the blaze under control, and officials said there were no injuries.
According to News 12 Brooklyn, the call came in at 11:08 p.m. Friday for a reported fire at the 86th Street address. Twenty-one FDNY units and 79 fire and EMS personnel responded and worked for several hours to knock down the flames, finally bringing the fire under control at 2:28 a.m. The cause remains under investigation, the department said.
Where it happened
86th Street is one of Bensonhurst’s main commercial corridors, a stretch packed with small restaurants, cafés and family-run bakeries that often keep their ovens going late into the night. The overnight fire was a sharp reminder of how fast things can turn dangerous in kitchen-heavy buildings.
In a separate incident last December, a large bakery blaze in Brooklyn last December injured a firefighter and multiple residents, underscoring how quickly oven-area fires can escalate.
Investigation under way
FDNY fire marshals are leading the probe into where and how the Bensonhurst blaze started and will release their findings once the investigation wraps. Per News 12 Brooklyn, investigators have not yet identified a cause and say more information will be shared as it becomes available.
No injuries were reported, and city agencies will continue to assess damage to the bakery storefront and any nearby properties. This story will be updated as officials release additional details.
