A late-night disturbance call in Melissa ended in tragedy after an officer shot and killed a man inside a home, an incident now under investigation by the Texas Rangers.
Police said officers were called around 11:30 p.m. Sunday to the 2600 block of E. Melissa Road for a reported disturbance. Inside the home, they encountered an armed man and another person. During the confrontation, an officer fired his weapon, and officers immediately provided medical aid before the man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No one else in the home and no officers were hurt, according to the department.
City communications director Bridget Saxton said the man’s name has not yet been released. The officer who opened fire has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in these situations, according to FOX 4.
Investigations and next steps
The criminal investigation has been turned over to the Texas Rangers, while the Melissa Police Department is running a separate internal review. This dual track is common after police use force: the outside criminal probe focuses on whether any charges are warranted, and the department’s administrative review looks at policy, training and whether procedures were followed. Local reporting notes that the Rangers are frequently called in to handle officer-involved shooting investigations across the state, as described by Click2Houston.
What officials say
Authorities have not released additional details about what led up to the shooting, and no arrests or charges have been announced. The Texas Rangers’ investigation is ongoing, and city officials say they will share more information as it becomes available, per FOX 4.
