Madison Heights spent the night chasing leaks after multiple water main breaks hit across the city late Friday, leaving some residents with discolored taps and short-lived water shutoffs. One break on Campbell Road was fixed early Saturday, while crews kept the backhoes and jackhammers running at other sites, with repairs still expected to wrap up by Sunday.
According to the City of Madison Heights, Department of Public Services crews have been on the job since late Friday, working on emergency repairs and tackling the outages one by one. The city’s update lists the various repair locations and notes that crews are working around the clock to restore service. Officials told residents they currently anticipate having repairs completed by Sunday.
“There is currently NO boil water advisory in effect,” the city stressed in its news flash. Residents near repair zones may see temporary water outages or rusty, discolored water, and are being asked to run the cold-water tap until the water clears. If problems stick around, the city is asking homeowners to call the Department of Public Services at 248-589-2294 for updates and to report leaks.
Background on recent breaks
Madison Heights is not the only community dealing with this kind of trouble. Clusters of water main failures have been popping up around the region in recent months, sometimes tied to transmission or pressure issues. As reported by CBS News Detroit, a previous string of breaks was traced to an equipment malfunction at a regional pump station that caused sudden pressure surges. Local officials say they coordinate with regional water authorities when system problems put distribution lines at risk.
How to handle discolored water
If your tap runs brown or cloudy, the city advises running cold water at the lowest faucet in your home until it clears, and avoiding hot water so sediment does not get pulled into appliances. For ongoing outages or visible leaks, residents should report the issue to the Department of Public Services at 248-589-2294, and for emergencies outside regular business hours, call the police non-emergency line at 248-585-2100. FOX 2 Detroit and other local outlets have been sharing the same basic precautions during recent main breaks.
