A violent overnight collision on a rural stretch of Manor roadway left a 23-year-old woman dead and four other people, including an 11-month-old infant and an approximately 2-year-old child, fighting for their lives early Sunday. The two-vehicle crash, reported around 3:58 a.m. in the 11700 block of North Farm-to-Market Road 973, triggered an automated crash alert that summoned first responders. Crews performed CPR on the infant at the scene before rushing all surviving victims to nearby hospitals.
What police say
Officers arrived to find two heavily damaged vehicles and immediately began lifesaving efforts, according to a statement from the Manor Police Department. The 11-month-old and the approximately 2-year-old were transported to a local hospital with critical injuries, and an adult male passenger from the same vehicle was also taken to the hospital with life-threatening wounds. The driver of that car, a 23-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Firefighters extricated the sole occupant of the second vehicle, who was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to FOX 7 Austin.
Road safety context
FM 973 has long been flagged as a trouble spot, as traffic has surged with regional growth. The Texas Department of Transportation and regional planners have outlined widening and realignment projects aimed at handling heavier traffic and improving safety along the corridor. Local crash data maintained by Vision Zero ATX and other trackers shows multiple serious collisions on the route in recent years, underscoring long-running concerns from drivers and nearby residents.
Investigation underway
The Manor Police Department said the names of those involved are being withheld until relatives can be notified and that investigators are still working to determine what caused the wreck. The Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol and the Travis County Sheriff’s Office Highway Enforcement and Accident Team are assisting with a reconstruction of the crash scene, according to FOX 7 Austin.
The collision adds further pressure on transportation planners as the region’s growth pushes more vehicles onto rural-style farm-to-market roads. Project materials from TxDOT show FM 973 remains a priority corridor for widening and realignment. Officials have not released additional information about the victims or provided a timeline for when the investigation might be completed.
