A Saturday afternoon carjacking turned deadly in Boston's Mattapan neighborhood when a woman was struck and killed by a fleeing driver, according to police. The crash drew a heavy police response and shut down streets near Fairway Street while investigators worked the scene. The woman was pronounced dead at the location and has not yet been publicly identified.
How police say the crash unfolded
Boston police say the chaos started when a driver crashed and abandoned a vehicle at Woodhaven and Blue Hill Avenue, then allegedly carjacked a second vehicle and continued down the street. The suspect hit the woman near Fairway Street at about 2 p.m., according to NBC Boston. Investigators told the station the suspect also hit several other vehicles, including an MBTA bus, before officers were able to take the person into custody. Officials said more details are expected after the suspect is booked.
Recent violent incidents in the neighborhood
The deadly crash lands in the middle of a rough stretch for Mattapan. Earlier this month, a double stabbing on Astoria Street and other recent shootings have added strain on residents and sparked fresh calls for both tougher enforcement and stronger community supports.
