Deputies in Clayton County say a hotel parking lot turned into the scene of a major bust when they uncovered what they describe as a sizable stash of illegal drugs in a vehicle tied to a visitor from Michigan.
Authorities report that items seized from the vehicle included marijuana, MDMA, THC wax, THC gummies and THC-infused ice cream cones, and that the woman driving was taken into custody and booked into the Clayton County Jail. Law enforcement officials told local media she had traveled from Michigan and allegedly planned to distribute drugs during FIFA World Cup activity in Atlanta.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, deputies with Sheriff Levon Allen’s Elite B.A.T. Unit were on proactive patrol at the Wyndham Garden Hotel when they spotted a vehicle that raised suspicions. After deputies searched the vehicle, they located the assortment of controlled substances, the station reports.
FOX 5 Atlanta also notes that the woman had driven from Michigan to the metro Atlanta area and that officials "have not yet confirmed the identity of the suspect or the specific legal charges she faces." It has not been clarified whether anyone else was inside the vehicle at the time or if investigators think the stop ties into a broader trafficking operation.
Event Policing And Regional Enforcement
The arrest unfolded while Atlanta was hosting multiple FIFA World Cup matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in mid-June, a stretch that brought a surge of visitors to area hotels and nearby neighborhoods, according to the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau. Discover Atlanta published the local match schedule and fan planning information for that busy period.
Law enforcement agencies across the region have been mounting targeted operations in recent months as part of a broader crackdown. In April, a U.S. Marshals Service task force reported a multi-week fugitive sweep in Clayton County that led to dozens of arrests and the seizure of substantial amounts of narcotics, underscoring stepped-up enforcement in the area. The U.S. Marshals Service detailed that operation in a public release.
Investigators have not released the suspect’s name or any charging documents in the hotel case, and the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office shared details of the traffic stop and arrest with local media in a statement. Officials are asking anyone who may have additional information related to the incident to contact the sheriff’s office through its public tip channels.
