South Carrollton Avenue in Mid-City ground to a halt Friday after New Orleans police responded to a barricade situation that shut down a busy stretch of the roadway. Officers called in a SWAT roll after an unnamed man reportedly barricaded himself inside a house in the 4200 block of South Carrollton Avenue. Traffic was blocked in both directions between Baudin Street and Tulane Avenue while tactical teams worked the scene.
According to the New Orleans Police Department, the street closure and tactical response were triggered by the barricade call. Officers urged drivers to steer clear of the area and find alternate routes while negotiators and tactical units worked to resolve the situation, according to NOLA.com.
Where the closure stretched
Police set up a perimeter along South Carrollton Avenue, closing the roadway between Baudin Street and Tulane Avenue and forcing detours across parts of Mid-City. The operation is the latest in a series of high-profile barricade or SWAT responses this year, including a March St. Roch standoff and a May deployment in the Desire neighborhood that drew a similar tactical turnout, as reported by WWL.
What officials have said so far
As of Friday, police had not released the suspect's name or said whether anyone had been arrested or injured, and the investigation remained active, according to NOLA.com. Authorities said additional details would be shared when available and again urged motorists to avoid the area until the scene was fully cleared.
