Mission Valley just added another big player to its hotel lineup. Element by Marriott is now open on the neighborhood's existing Marriott campus, bringing a 148-room, seven-story property developed by Driftwood Capital and operated by Driftwood Hospitality Management. Sitting right next to the longtime Marriott San Diego Mission Valley, the new-build brings kitchen-equipped suites, roomy workstations and a dedicated fitness center to the cluster. Management says the hotel is meant to work for quick business trips as well as longer stays, and it plugs into the broader campus to expand meeting capacity ahead of a busy summer calendar.
According to the hotel's Marriott listing, Element San Diego Mission Valley offers 148 rooms and suites with fully equipped kitchenettes, the brand's signature Heavenly® beds and spa-inspired bathrooms, plus roughly 10,000 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor event space. As reported by Boutique Hotelier USA, planners can combine meeting inventory across the Element and the neighboring Marriott campus for about 40,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor function space. The property also includes an on-site lobby bar and Rise breakfast offerings aimed at both business and leisure travelers.
Developer and site history
Miami-based Driftwood Acquisitions (now part of Driftwood Capital) acquired the Marriott Mission Valley in 2019 and later proposed a second on-site hotel to expand the complex, according to The Real Deal. Trade reporting shows the firm broke ground on the Element in 2024 and initially described the project as a roughly 150-room build before the property came online this summer, as reported by REBusinessOnline. The finished hotel reclaims previously underused parcel space at the Marriott campus and was designed to share select amenities with the older property.
Meeting and event space
The Element's meeting rooms are set up to spill outdoors, with folding Nano doors and terrace space that let planners blend breakout sessions with al fresco receptions and create flexible indoor-outdoor layouts for smaller conferences and social events, What Now San Diego reports. Paired with the Marriott's larger ballrooms and banquet options, that mix gives event managers more ways to adjust headcounts and schedules. The campus approach also means groups can book room blocks across both hotels when a single property cannot cover demand.
Traveler takeaways and hiring
The new Element sits about eight miles from San Diego International Airport and is close to the Zoo, SeaWorld and the Gaslamp Quarter, and the property offers a complimentary Rise breakfast and a fitness center, per the hotel's Marriott listing. Driftwood Hospitality's careers pages show multiple posted openings in front desk, culinary and housekeeping roles as the property ramps up operations, per Driftwood Hospitality, signaling a boost in local hiring. For reservations and group inquiries, the hotel's sales team is handling campus bookings across both properties.
“Element San Diego Mission Valley enhances Mission Valley’s hotel offerings with a modern and eco-conscious approach,” the complex general manager said, and Driftwood's CEO added that the development reflects San Diego’s natural charm while serving the regional demand for high-quality business and leisure accommodations, per Boutique Hotelier USA. The hotel is now taking reservations through Marriott's channels, and event planners can contact the sales office to discuss campus-wide room blocks and meeting setups.
