Authorities say a Montgomery County fugitive did not make it far past the jet bridge on Saturday. Detectives were waiting at George Bush Intercontinental Airport when an international flight arrived, and they arrested a man wanted on a felony warrant tied to a child injury case.
Montgomery County Precinct 3 Constable Ryan Gable said detectives identified the suspect as Johnathan Michael Dennis. He was taken into custody without incident after deplaning, then transported to the Montgomery County Jail and booked on the outstanding warrant for injury to a child.
According to a press release shared with Woodlands Online, the case began on May 19, when detectives with the Constable’s Children’s Safe Harbor unit opened an investigation. Over the course of that work, investigators say they developed probable cause that led a judge to issue the warrant charging Dennis with injury to a child.
The release states that detectives later learned Dennis had left the United States. At that point, they coordinated with federal partners to monitor his travel plans and watch for his return to the Houston area.
What the Charge Means
Under Texas law, “injury to a child” is covered by Penal Code Section 22.04 and can be filed as a felony. When the alleged conduct involves bodily injury, it is commonly charged as a third degree felony, which carries potential prison time.
As outlined in the Texas statutes, the exact penalties depend on how serious the harm is and what the accused person’s mental state was at the time. The law makes distinctions between acts that are intentional, knowing, reckless or criminally negligent.
Children’s Safe Harbor, the county’s child advocacy center, assists in these types of investigations by providing forensic interviews and support services for young victims and their families. That work can help build cases while trying to shield children from further trauma.
Arrest At Houston Airport
To bring Dennis back into local custody, detectives say they teamed up with Homeland Security Investigations to track his itinerary. When his international flight landed at George Bush Intercontinental Airport on Saturday, officers were in place.
Authorities say he was arrested at the airport and taken straight to the Montgomery County Jail to be booked on the warrant, according to Woodlands Online.
Constable Gable publicly thanked Homeland Security Investigations, the Houston Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offenders and Fugitive Task Force for their assistance in the operation. He noted that the investigation remains active and emphasized that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
