A late-night high-speed crash along Florida Boulevard in Neptune Beach ended with multiple people pulled from a heavy tree line and a 19-year-old driver headed to jail, according to police.
Officers said the wreck happened Friday near the 1300 block of Florida Boulevard, after one vehicle slammed into the back of another at a high rate of speed. In a Facebook post, the Neptune Beach Police Department said victims were "catapulted into a heavy tree line" and had to be extricated by Jacksonville Fire Rescue before being taken to local hospitals with injuries.
The post identified the driver as 19-year-old Trenton Mallory. Investigators reported seeing indicators of impairment while speaking with him, and Mallory was arrested at the scene. He was booked on multiple counts, including DUI with property damage or personal injury, DUI, careless driving, possession of alcoholic beverage by a person under 21, an open-container violation, and operating a vehicle with expired registration, according to police.
Crash and legal context
Florida’s driving under the influence laws, including how DUI is defined and penalized and how penalties increase when a crash causes property damage or personal injury, are laid out in section 316.193 of the state traffic code, as published by the Florida Legislature. State law also bans possession of alcoholic beverages by anyone under 21 under section 562.111, which is likewise set out by the Florida Legislature, while open-container rules appear in section 316.1936. Those provisions match the list of charges police say were filed after Friday’s crash.
Investigation and next steps
According to the department’s post, officers noted signs of impairment while talking with Mallory and took him into custody on the spot. Police have not released the names or specific conditions of the injured, stating only that the victims were transported to area hospitals. The department says the investigation remains active.
Local safety concerns
The collision adds to ongoing concerns about speeding and safety along Florida Boulevard and nearby beachside routes, where earlier serious crashes have fueled calls for changes to intersections and stepped-up enforcement. A prior report on a fatal collision after Fletcher highlighted similar community frustration over traffic speeds and crosswalk safety along the same corridor.
Authorities say the probe is ongoing and that more information will be released as the case develops. This story will be updated when the department provides additional details.
