NetJets has kicked off maintenance operations at a new facility at Reading Regional Airport in Reading, Pennsylvania, with the first company aircraft already in for service. The fractional operator is working out of a roughly 30,000-square-foot hangar under a multi-decade ground lease, a setup airport officials say will deliver steady jobs and aviation activity for Berks County. The maintenance center is slated to serve NetJets’ fractional fleet across the busy northeastern corridor and boost Reading Regional’s profile as a regional aviation hub.
According to ch-aviation, NetJets launched operations at a leased 30,000-square-foot hangar at RDG under a ground lease of roughly 29 years. That reporting also describes the site as NetJets’ largest maintenance, repair and overhaul location in the northeastern United States and lists the operator's active fleet at about 731 aircraft. Reading Regional Airport Authority officials have called the start of operations a milestone that strengthens the airport’s role in regional aviation.
Local lift expected for jobs and investment
Local officials and airport leaders told area outlets that the arrival of NetJets’ first aircraft for service is expected to bring long-term economic benefits, including additional maintenance jobs and private-sector investment, according to local reporting. Berks Weekly published the airport authority’s announcement about the first aircraft arrivals earlier this month. Industry reporting from Airport Improvement adds that the ground lease runs nearly 30 years and that related documents describe the parcel as including a roughly 35,000-square-foot hangar, a slightly larger figure than some other outlets reported.
Why NetJets chose Reading
Business jet operators have been increasing in-house maintenance capacity to cut aircraft ferry time and speed up turnarounds, and industry observers say the Northeast corridor is a logical place to add more MRO bandwidth. AeroXplorer notes that operators are positioning shops where they can reduce downtime and improve dispatch reliability. With a fleet counted in the hundreds by operator databases, NetJets’ scale helps explain the investment in a dedicated regional facility instead of relying only on third-party shops.
What comes next for RDG
Reading Regional has been pursuing a strategic plan that includes apron improvements and new hangar construction, and Airport Improvement reported that additional box-hangar projects and infrastructure upgrades are planned over the next 12 to 24 months. The airport has also hosted career fairs and events with NetJets and other industry partners to build a pipeline of technicians and aircraft service workers, according to event listings and airport materials. Officials say the combination of a long-term tenant and a local hiring push should help stabilize airport revenue and expand aviation job opportunities for Berks County residents.
