A Monday morning drive along North Broadway in North Knoxville turned deadly when a car slammed off the roadway into a creek, killing the driver and two pedestrians, according to city emergency officials. The vehicle left the road and went into the water near the First Creek Greenway shortly after 8:30 a.m., prompting rescuers and investigators to shut down part of North Broadway and the greenway while they worked the scene.
According to WVLT, the Knoxville Fire Department confirmed that all three people were dead and that crews were on site working to pull the vehicle from the creek. WVLT reported that KFD had not yet released the victims' names and that the cause of the crash was still under investigation. Officials said additional information would be made public once detectives and crash reconstruction teams finished processing the area.
Where it happened
The First Creek Greenway lines this section of North Broadway in north Knoxville, a heavily traveled arterial that the city has flagged as a trouble spot for serious wrecks. The City of Knoxville Speed Management Plan lists North Broadway among the corridors with a high number of fatal and serious-injury crashes from 2020 through 2024. Hoodline has previously covered other pedestrian-involved crashes along this stretch, including a recent hit-and-run that left a Knoxville woman injured.
Crash patterns and safety
Local planners and researchers lean on detailed crash mapping to decide where safety upgrades are most urgently needed. The Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization's interactive map, accessed through the Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization, compiles law-enforcement crash reports and highlights clusters of severe incidents along major roads and at crossings. Safety advocates have pushed for lower speed limits, safer crossings, and broader street redesigns on North Broadway in an effort to cut the risk for people walking and biking.
Knoxville fire and police officials said the investigation into Monday's crash remains active and that more details will be released as they become available. Authorities have not made the victims' identities public, and it is not yet known whether any charges or additional enforcement actions will result. WVLT reported that investigators are asking anyone with information or video of the incident to contact authorities, and that officials plan to provide updates when they are able.
