A 62-year-old North Park woman died after she was struck by a car on El Cajon Boulevard near Hamilton Street in North Park last Friday, according to San Diego police. Paramedics rushed her to a hospital, where she later died. Police say the crash remains under investigation.
As reported by The San Diego Union‑Tribune, the collision happened around 11:40 PM when a 2020 Volkswagen Passat traveling eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard hit the woman as she crossed the street outside a marked crosswalk. Investigators told the paper they do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor. The San Diego Police Department’s Traffic Division is leading the investigation, and anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
A Dangerous Stretch
Residents along this stretch of El Cajon Boulevard have seen scenes like this before. The corridor has been the site of multiple serious pedestrian crashes in recent years, including a high-injury collision in North Park last October and a January incident in which a pedestrian was badly hurt after crossing outside a crosswalk, reported by NBC 7 San Diego. Neighbors and advocates have repeatedly pushed for safer crossings and traffic calming along the boulevard.
Planning Eyes Fixes
City planners have been eyeing potential crosswalk and streetscape improvements along El Cajon Boulevard, including at Hamilton Street, to improve safety for people on foot. The North Park Planning Committee minutes note pedestrian improvements at El Cajon and Hamilton, underscoring ongoing calls for upgrades along the busy corridor.
San Diego police are asking anyone who may have witnessed Friday night’s crash or who has additional information to contact Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. The department’s Traffic Division continues to investigate.
