A 36-year-old man was shot early Saturday morning along the 2200 block of North Palethorp Street in North Philadelphia and rushed to a nearby hospital, after what police describe as a two-part attack that turned a quiet block into a crime scene before sunrise.
Investigators say the gunman fired at least five times as the victim sat in his vehicle, striking him once in the back. The shooter initially fled, then returned to the scene and punched the wounded man in the face before taking off again.
What police say about the shooting
The shooting happened at about 5:15 a.m., and investigators told reporters they believe both men live on the same block and that an argument may have led to the attack, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police say the suspect remains at large as detectives work to piece together what sparked the violence.
Where this fits in Philadelphia's crime picture
The city has seen shifting trends in recent years: Philadelphia recorded a historic drop in homicides in 2025 even as shootings persist in some neighborhoods, as The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. That mix of progress and ongoing, localized violence helps explain why an early-morning confrontation like this rattles neighbors, even as broader numbers show improvement.
Police canvass block for witnesses
Detectives say they are canvassing the 2200 block and reviewing nearby surveillance footage as part of the ongoing probe, per NBC10 Philadelphia. Authorities have not released a detailed physical description of the shooter and are asking anyone with information to contact investigators. For people living on the block, the fact that the assailant allegedly came back to punch an already wounded man has only amplified concerns about volatile, up-close violence in the neighborhood.
