Yesterday's trolley run near Old Town turned fatal when a pedestrian was hit by a Metropolitan Transit System train and later died at a local hospital, authorities said.
First responders were called at about 1:05 PM to Taylor Street between Pacific Highway and Congress Street, where crews began CPR on the injured person. According to 10News, San Diego police said the victim was taken to a UCSD hospital and was later pronounced dead. The person's identity has not been released while officials work to notify family members, and investigators are still sorting out exactly how the collision happened.
Where the collision happened
The crash unfolded just outside the Old Town Transit Center, a busy transfer hub where Taylor Street meets Pacific Highway and several MTS trolley and bus lines converge. Station layout details published by MTS show tracks and platforms clustered around the intersection, while a City of San Diego mobility report notes that the tracks cross Taylor Street at grade between Pacific Highway and Congress Street.
Rail safety context
The death adds to a grim pattern of rail-pedestrian incidents in the area this year. A separate fatality in late May shut down Coaster service between Old Town and Santa Fe Depot, per Hoodline. In cases like this, transit agencies and police typically review sightlines, signage, and crossing protections to see whether any changes are needed.
San Diego police have not released additional details about the victim or what led up to the impact, and the case remains under investigation, per 10News. Anyone with information can use SDPD's non-emergency number, 619-531-2000, listed on the City of San Diego website. This story will be updated as authorities release more details.
