A criminal-alien apprehension operation in Central Florida ended with an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in the hospital and a suspect in cuffs, after authorities say a motorist struck the agent during a traffic stop and left him with a significant head wound. The driver, identified by officials as Elias Bautista, a Mexican national who entered the country illegally, was later located during a targeted law-enforcement operation and arrested. He is charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, which authorities note is a felony offense.
According to FLHSMV, the confrontation unfolded during a June 16 traffic stop near Americana Boulevard and Pointe Vista Circle in Orange County. Investigators from the Florida Highway Patrol’s BCII, the Criminal Alien Apprehension Team, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, and Homeland Security Investigations worked together to track and identify Bautista. He was taken into custody on June 18 with assistance from the Levy County Sheriff’s Office.
Arrest in Levy County
Officials say Bautista was ultimately arrested in Levy County as part of the multi-agency operation. The Levy County government lists the sheriff’s office as the primary law enforcement agency for Bronson and nearby communities where the arrest was reported to have occurred, according to Levy County. The county site also provides the public with contact information for the local detention bureau and sheriff’s office.
Legal consequences
State prosecutors have charged Bautista with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, a crime that triggers tougher penalties under Florida law. Aggravated battery against a law enforcement officer is reclassified to a higher felony level and carries a minimum mandatory sentence of five years, according to the Florida Senate. Lawmakers designed these enhancements to increase punishment when officers are injured while carrying out their official duties.
What’s next
Authorities say Bautista remains in custody while the investigation and prosecutions move forward, and federal immigration officials are also involved, according to FLHSMV. The agency said the arrest was the product of a coordinated effort among state, local, and federal partners, and that investigators are continuing to work with ICE and Homeland Security to address any remaining issues in the case. Charging documents, bail information, and upcoming court dates were not immediately available.
