Last Friday in Pacific Beach ended with a mangled car, a severely injured passenger, and a driver in handcuffs after what police describe as a brief chase that started in a Vons parking lot and spilled onto Garnet Avenue.

San Diego police say the incident began around 7:30 PM in the 2400 block of Garnet Avenue, where a 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 was reportedly driving erratically in the supermarket lot, according to NBC 7 San Diego. When officers moved in, the Mercedes took off eastbound on Garnet, then slammed into a 2020 Hyundai Veloster.

The collision disabled both vehicles. A 24-year-old passenger in the Hyundai was rushed to a hospital with multiple fractured vertebrae. Police said the Mercedes driver, described as a 39-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence causing injury and felony evading. Officers also suspect he was under the influence of narcotics, though they have not said which substance, NBC 7 San Diego reported.

Legal consequences

Under California law, driving under the influence that causes injury can be charged as a felony under Vehicle Code §23153. Attempting to elude a pursuing officer that results in serious injury can also bring felony charges under Vehicle Code §2800.3.

Both statutes carry the possibility of state prison time and steep fines, and San Diego County's 2026 bail schedule lists substantial initial bail amounts for felony vehicle offenses. Judges can tack on additional enhancements depending on the severity of the injuries and whether the defendant has prior convictions.

Traffic worries in Pacific Beach

The crash adds to growing concern about traffic safety in the beachside neighborhood. In January, a January hit-and-run that killed a juvenile drew fresh scrutiny to local driving habits and enforcement.

Garnet Avenue in particular has been a long-running trouble spot. Police have previously staged DUI checkpoints along the corridor, including one at 2700 Garnet Avenue that led to multiple arrests, according to ABC 10News. Residents and safety advocates have been pressing for safer crossings and more consistent enforcement on the busy strip, according to local reporting.

The San Diego Police Department's Traffic Division is investigating Friday's crash. Officers had not released additional details about the suspect or whether formal charges have been filed as of publication. For ongoing updates, see the original report from NBC 7 San Diego.
