Two bicyclists were killed and a third was injured Thursday evening when an alleged drunk driver plowed into a group of cyclists heading north on Pacific Coast Highway near Solimar Beach. One rider died at the scene, the others were rushed to Ventura County Medical Center, and a second victim later died. The driver was arrested on the spot, and the crash remains under investigation.
According to News Channel 3-12, California Highway Patrol dispatchers began getting multiple 911 calls around 7:08 p.m. about a collision on State Route 1 near Solimar Beach Road. A preliminary CHP investigation found that a 2007 gray Nissan Frontier veered onto the right shoulder and into the designated bike lane, slamming into the three cyclists from behind. Investigators estimate the pickup was traveling about 50 to 55 mph before it hit a guardrail and came to rest. Several bystanders stopped to help and rendered aid before paramedics arrived.
Victims and arrest
BikinginLA reports that one victim, a 33-year-old woman from Bend, Oregon, died at the scene, and that a 39-year-old man from Ventura later died at Ventura County Medical Center. The outlet says the driver, identified as a 24-year-old Oxnard man, was arrested by CHP on suspicion of felony DUI causing injury and was being held at Ventura County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail, with a hearing scheduled for June 15. The report also notes the CHP’s CAD log number for the incident as 260611VT0384.
Speed and risk
Road-safety research has long warned how a little extra speed can turn deadly. An analysis by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that a struck pedestrian’s risk of death rises to about 50 percent at 42 mph, roughly 75 percent at 50 mph, and about 90 percent at 58 mph. The CHP’s estimated speed range for the pickup puts this crash squarely in that high-risk zone.
Investigation and legal next steps
The CHP says the collision is still under investigation and has asked anyone with information to contact the Ventura Area Office at 805-662-2640 and reference CAD Log 260611VT0384, according to News Channel 3-12. Prosecutors will review the CHP’s findings before any formal charges are filed or updated in court, and local reporters say an arraignment is expected in Ventura County Superior Court.
Why this matters
BikinginLA notes that these two deaths are the 33rd and 34th reported bicycling fatalities in Southern California this year, and the sixth and seventh in Ventura County. Advocates say the grim tally underscores the persistent danger for people traveling by bike along PCH, where cyclists and safety groups have repeatedly pushed for lower speeds, protected lanes, and other upgrades to keep riders out of harm’s way.
The investigation and any criminal filings will determine what happens next in court. Authorities say more information will be released after next-of-kin notifications are complete and as the legal process moves forward. Anyone with tips is urged to contact the CHP Ventura Area Office and reference CAD Log 260611VT0384.
