What started as a routine parking maneuver on a Pearl City street ended in tragedy, after an 82-year-old woman who was struck while sitting on an unimproved sidewalk last Thursday died from her injuries, Honolulu police said.

The collision happened about 7:48 p.m. near the intersection of Hoomalu Street and Puu Poni Street. Police said a 52-year-old man was trying to park his car when he hit the woman, who was seated on the unimproved sidewalk area. She was taken to an area hospital in what officers initially described as “good condition,” but the Honolulu Medical Examiner later notified police that she had died from her injuries on Sunday. The driver stayed at the scene and was not reported injured.

Police account of the crash

According to the Honolulu Police Department, the man was attempting to park on the unimproved sidewalk adjacent to a residence when his vehicle struck the 82-year-old woman. In Honolulu, police note, the space between the edge of the roadway and a property’s line is considered the unimproved sidewalk area.

HPD’s Traffic Division has listed the case as “Traffic Fatality #19 of 2026” and said the investigation is ongoing.

Medical examiner confirms death

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office notified police on Sunday that the woman had succumbed to injuries from the collision, as reported by Hawaii News Now. That report also relays police’s statement that speed, drugs or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors at this time.

Where this fits on Oahu

HPD’s traffic page notes this is Oahu’s 19th traffic fatality so far this year, compared with 32 at the same point in 2025, a comparison included in the department’s notice. The Vehicular Homicide Section is continuing to examine the circumstances of the crash.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact the Honolulu Police Department’s Vehicular Homicide Section, Hawaii News Now reports. The investigation remains active.
