Police say a 23-year-old Portland man was taken into custody Friday after an alleged high-speed hit-and-run on Interstate 84 that injured another driver and two young children. According to witnesses and officers, the Mercedes-Benz involved in the crash was abandoned on westbound I-84 near the I-205 split while the driver bolted into a nearby neighborhood. The Kia Sportage that was struck suffered heavy damage and at least one adult was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
As reported by KOIN, police say the Mercedes was traveling about 107 miles per hour before it hit the Kia, prompting officers to upgrade the response to a “priority hit-and-run with reported injuries.” A third vehicle was also involved but sustained only minor damage, according to the outlet.
The Portland Police Bureau says officers were dispatched at about 5:48 p.m., then tracked the suspect into a nearby neighborhood and arrested him near Northeast 117th Avenue and Northeast Shaver Street. Officers located and seized the abandoned Mercedes in the westbound lanes by the I-205 split, and authorities say the suspect was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center.
Suspect Identified and Charges Listed
Police identified the suspect as 23-year-old Antonion Chris Hall of Portland and, according to KOIN, booked him into the Multnomah County Detention Center. Hall faces multiple counts including third-degree assault; failure to perform the duties of a driver involving injury and property damage; reckless driving; and two counts of recklessly endangering another person, police said. The investigation remains active and prosecutors are expected to review the case before any formal charges are filed.
Legal Implications
The charges against Hall are allegations at this stage, and anyone arrested is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. If prosecutors pursue felony counts and secure convictions, those offenses can carry potential prison time and fines, while hit-and-run violations that involve injury typically bring enhanced penalties under Oregon law. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office will decide on formal filings after reviewing the police reports and other evidence.
How to Help Investigators
Police are asking anyone who may have dash-cam or cellphone video of the crash to contact investigators and share any information that could help the case. For details on how to submit tips or reach the investigating unit, officials directed the public to the news and tips sections on the Portland Police Bureau website. Authorities also reminded drivers to avoid aggressive maneuvers and to slow down on high-speed corridors like I-84.
Context
High-speed collisions and hit-and-runs on freeway interchanges remain a major focus of local traffic safety efforts. Portland's Vision Zero program, the city's plan to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries, cites speed reduction and roadway engineering changes as key tools to help prevent violent crashes like this one, according to city officials.
