A before-school commute in Beaverton turned into a medical emergency early Wednesday when a 14-year-old on an electric scooter was struck by a car at SW Scholls Ferry Road and SW Loon Drive.
The collision happened just before 6:30 a.m. Police say the teen rider was in a marked crosswalk and was wearing a helmet when the car hit. The 14-year-old was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, and the roadway stayed shut down for several hours while investigators documented the scene and gathered evidence.
According to KATU, the driver, a 16-year-old boy, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Officers are asking anyone who saw the crash or has information to contact Beaverton police. The outlet notes its story, originally posted Wednesday, was later updated to correct the pedestrian’s age to 14.
Rising injuries statewide
The crash lands amid a sharp climb in micromobility injuries across Oregon. The Oregon Health Authority reports that e-scooter–related hospital and emergency department visits more than doubled between 2021 and 2025, rising from 211 visits in 2021 to 509 visits through September 30, 2025. That surge has prompted officials to urge riders, especially children and teens, to wear helmets and take extra care on busy streets.
What investigators say
Investigators with the Beaverton Police Department Traffic Team and the Washington County Sheriff's Office processed the scene, and authorities say the crash remains under active investigation. The driver has not been publicly cited, and officials have not released information about speed, possible impairment, or whether any charges might be recommended, according to KATU. Police are still asking witnesses to call the department's tip line at 503-526-2261.
Safety reminders
State health officials and trauma clinicians say a few basics can make a big difference for e-scooter riders: helmets, high visibility, and slower speeds. The Oregon Health Authority and local hospitals have been urging extra precautions as micromobility use keeps growing.
