A man was found shot to death in downtown Los Angeles early Friday, triggering a homicide investigation and flooding a pocket of South Park with flashing lights and crime-scene tape.
Los Angeles police said officers were called around 2:30 a.m. to the 1200 block of South Hope Street, between Flower Street and Grand Avenue, where they found the victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene, according to MyNewsLA. The outlet reported that detectives had no suspect description as of Friday morning and that a full investigation was underway. City News Service contributed to the initial reporting.
Where It Happened
The 1200 block of South Hope Street sits just south of the heart of the downtown business district, running between Flower Street and Grand Avenue. The strip mixes commercial buildings with residential properties and service providers, and it typically sees people coming and going at almost all hours.
Violence Against Unhoused Angelenos
The killing lands amid broader concerns over deadly violence on Los Angeles streets, particularly against residents without housing. An investigation by LAist and The LA Local found that at least 278 unhoused Angelenos were shot to death between 2015 and 2025, a number advocates say likely undercounts the true scale of the problem. They argue that more focused prevention efforts and targeted investigations are needed to curb shootings in public spaces and encampments.
Police had released few additional details as of Friday and still had not provided a suspect description. This story will be updated as investigators make more information public.
