An early Wednesday stabbing at an apartment complex on North 46th Street, just steps from the University of South Florida, left two people wounded but in stable condition, according to law enforcement. Deputies responded to a pre-dawn 911 call and say everyone involved in the incident has been identified. Authorities also say that one of the people involved, along with the suspect, are USF students.
In a press release, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said its 911 dispatch center received a call at 4:26 a.m. on June 3 reporting that a man and another person had been stabbed at the North 46th Street complex. The agency reported that both victims are currently in stable condition and that "all individuals involved have been identified and accounted for." The sheriff's office described the investigation as active and said additional updates will come through its Public Affairs Office.
Local station WTSP posted video from the scene on Wednesday, reporting that investigators have identified a suspect and confirmed that one of the people involved is a USF student. The station's footage shows deputies canvassing the complex in the early hours and talking with residents as detectives work to piece together what happened.
Off-campus safety back in the spotlight
The stabbing lands at a tense moment for the USF community, with safety still front of mind after the April disappearance and deaths of two USF doctoral students. That separate case led prosecutors to seek the death penalty for an accused roommate, according to reporting by The Associated Press, and prompted university officials to review how off-campus housing is presented to students and to remind the community about safety resources.
How to reach authorities and campus resources
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says the case remains active and that updates will be provided by its Public Affairs Office. The agency included a public affairs contact for media inquiries in its written statement and is asking anyone with information to contact HCSO or call 911 in an emergency.
Students looking for campus-specific help can contact the University of South Florida Police Department at (813) 974-2628 or the USFPD tip line at 813-974-TIPS (8477), according to the USF Police Department. The department also offers safety resources including escort services and a blue-light phone network for people on campus.
The investigation is still underway, and this story will be updated as authorities release more details. Officials are urging anyone with video, photos, or other information to share what they have with investigators through standard tip channels.
