An early-morning fire tore through a single-family home in Southeast Portland on Monday, sending a thick column of smoke over the Lents neighborhood and drawing a major emergency response. Flames from the house, near Southeast 88th Avenue and Southeast Liebe Street directly across from Lents Park, were visible from blocks away, according to neighbors.
The Oregonian/OregonLive reported that arriving crews were met with heavy fire and launched an immediate exterior attack, cutting into the roof to ventilate thick smoke while hose lines hit the main body of the blaze. Firefighters worked the scene from multiple angles, tackling both the flames and the possibility that people might still be inside.
Rescue and response
In a statement, Portland Fire & Rescue said firefighters located and removed an occupant from the back side of the home, where the person was evaluated on scene. The bureau said there were no immediate reports of injuries to firefighters or others at the incident.
Timeline and investigation
The Oregonian/OregonLive noted that Portland's emergency-services map showed about 14 units responding to the fire across from Lents Park, and that the blaze was largely knocked down by around 6:15 a.m. The outlet reported that fire investigators are expected to examine where and how the fire started.
Portland Fire & Rescue said investigators will work to determine the cause of the blaze and urged anyone with information to contact the bureau. This story will be updated if officials release additional details.
