A fatal pedestrian crash on Interstate 20 at Cooper Street in Arlington earlier today shut down every westbound lane and turned the morning drive into a standstill. Emergency crews and crash investigators swarmed the scene while officers blocked the main lanes, leaving commuters crawling or searching for side streets to escape the gridlock.
The Texas Department of Transportation’s Fort Worth account posted on X at about 4:45 a.m., warning drivers, “I-20 in Arlington: all WB lanes closed at Cooper St due to vehicle incident. Expect delays. Seek alternate route.” TxDOT Fort Worth urged motorists to steer clear of the area while crews worked the crash, and that social post served as the first official traffic alert about the closure.

Crash details
Police at the scene told media partner WFAA that the collision involved a pedestrian, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Fort Worth Star-Telegram noted that authorities had not yet released the victim’s identity and that investigators remained on the highway into the morning. It was not immediately clear how long the westbound lanes would stay shut.
Traffic impact
The complete shutdown quickly backed up vehicles and jammed the early-morning rush. Drivers were told to build in extra travel time while emergency crews and investigators worked the scene, and motorists were urged to avoid the Cooper Street interchange altogether if they could.
Why this stretch matters
The I-20 corridor through Arlington, including the busy Cooper Street interchange, is already under the microscope in a TxDOT safety and capacity study because of frequent serious crashes and heavy congestion. TxDOT is weighing improvements aimed at cutting down on wrecks and easing traffic, and local reporting has highlighted recent deadly incidents along this same stretch, including a bicyclist killed on I-20 last month. See the earlier bicyclist killed on I-20 last month for background on that crash.
Arlington police and TxDOT did not immediately release additional details. This is a developing story, and updates will follow as authorities provide more information.
