A late-night crash at a Raynham intersection left a 52-year-old New Bedford motorcyclist dead Friday, shutting down part of South Street East as investigators worked under the lights. The collision happened around 9:40 p.m. at South Street East and Hill Street, where a Harley-Davidson and an SUV collided. The rider was rushed to Morton Hospital and later pronounced dead, and police say the case remains under active investigation.
Investigation under way
According to Raynham police, a Ford Explorer struck the Harley-Davidson at the intersection, prompting a response from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section to assist local detectives. First responders initially requested a medical helicopter, but ultimately transported the rider by ground with flight medics to Morton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities have directed additional questions to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office and did not immediately say whether the SUV’s driver might face charges, according to NBC Boston.
Statewide motorcycle context
Deadly crashes like this one continue to be a concern across Massachusetts. Data from MassDOT show there were 58 motorcycle-operator fatalities in 2023, and the agency highlights its IMPACT crash portal as a way to track high-risk corridors. Officials regularly warn that as the weather warms up, more motorcycles return to the roads, and they urge drivers to stay alert, check blind spots, and give riders extra space. Local police departments and safety advocates often lean on that seasonal spike in traffic to ramp up outreach and enforcement aimed at preventing crashes between motorcycles and larger vehicles.
Legal next steps
State police reconstruction teams remained at the South Street East scene while Raynham detectives documented evidence and interviewed any witnesses. The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office is expected to review the findings and determine whether any charges or court filings are warranted as the investigation moves forward, according to NBC Boston.
