Brookfield East High School in Brookfield went into lockdown Monday after an automated call reported a threat against a school building. Students and staff sheltered in place while officers checked the campus and nearby grounds to confirm the building was secure. The lockdown was lifted early in the afternoon, but police stuck around for the rest of the school day as the investigation continued.
According to TMJ4, the Elmbrook School District received a computer-generated call around 12:15 p.m. warning of an upcoming threat, without naming a specific school. Brookfield police evaluated the threat, then carried out a K-9 sweep of the exterior of Brookfield East before lifting the lockdown at 1:50 p.m. Officers kept a stepped-up presence on campus afterward while they continued to look into the call.
Police and district response
District leaders told families they were following established safety procedures and working closely with Brookfield police while officers checked the school grounds. Federal reporting shows the FBI has warned of an increase in swatting incidents and has stressed that every suspicious report has to be treated as a potentially real threat, according to WSMV. That guidance is part of why families often continue to see officers on campus even after a school receives an all-clear.
A national pattern of hoax threats
The Brookfield East lockdown is the latest in a run of automated or spoofed calls that have triggered lockdowns, evacuations and temporary closures at schools and other public sites around the country. NBC Los Angeles reported that a swatting call prompted an evacuation at Burbank High School in April, and the Associated Press has documented multiple hoax campaigns along with related investigations and prosecutions. Investigators say callers frequently rely on spoofed numbers or automated systems, which can make the hoaxes hard to trace and expensive in terms of emergency response.
What families should know
Families with questions were directed to the Elmbrook School District and the Brookfield Police Department for confirmed information instead of social media posts or unverified messages. As TMJ4 reported, no arrests have been announced and the investigation is still active. Parents looking for updates are being told to rely on official district and police channels for the latest verified details.
