A city sanitation truck broke loose while it was being towed yesterday afternoon and rolled into a house in north Dallas, authorities said, rattling an elderly couple but leaving them physically unharmed.
Officials said the vehicle detached around 2:20 p.m. and slammed into a home in the 8500 block of Thunderbird Lane. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, secured the area and had the structure checked for damage. The couple who lives in the house was not injured, according to authorities.
What Police Say Happened
The sanitation truck was being hauled by a third-party tow company when it separated from the tow and rolled into the residence, according to CBS News. Dallas police told the outlet the truck came loose at about 2:20 p.m., prompting a full emergency response while crews worked to stabilize the scene and keep neighbors away from the wreckage.
Investigators are still trying to figure out how the truck broke free from the towing equipment, and police said the probe into the separation is ongoing.
Towing Oversight And How It Is Supposed To Work
Towing operations in Dallas are regulated at both the city and state levels. The Dallas Department of Transportation and Public Works oversees local tow-service rules, while the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation handles licensing and enforcement for tow trucks and operators across the state.
City transportation guidance notes that residents can report suspected towing violations by calling 311. At the state level, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation maintains complaint and sanction procedures for licensed tow companies. Those layers of oversight are designed to make heavy-equipment tows and roadside work safer for nearby residents and first responders.
Investigation Still Underway
Investigators remained on scene Friday evaluating the house for structural damage and examining the towing equipment while they worked to determine exactly what went wrong, CBS News reported.
Police reiterated that the homeowners were not hurt and confirmed that the vehicle involved was a city sanitation truck. Officials did not immediately release further details while the investigation continues.
What Neighbors Can Do Now
Neighbors or anyone affected by the crash can report property damage or concerns about the tow operation by calling 311 or filing a complaint with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, according to the Dallas Department of Transportation and Public Works.
Those complaint channels allow officials to open inspections and pursue enforcement if a tow company or its equipment is found to be out of compliance.
