San Diego started today under a blanket of low clouds and cool air, with Lindbergh Field reporting overcast skies and temperatures in the low 60s. Inland neighborhoods are expected to shake off the gray later, clearing to partly to mostly sunny skies and warming into the low 70s by this afternoon.
Afternoon Sun and a Light South Breeze
Highs should top out near 73°F across much of the city, with a light south breeze around 0-10 mph and otherwise dry conditions on tap today. The shallow marine layer will thin and spread inland through midday, allowing interior areas to warm up while immediate coastal neighborhoods remain noticeably cooler. According to the National Weather Service, late-week changes are set to deepen that marine layer as we head into the weekend.
Weekend Marine Layer and Inland Gusts Crank Up
Forecasters say a low-pressure system sliding toward the coast from tomorrow into Saturday will strengthen onshore flow, deepening the night-and-morning low clouds and knocking daytime highs down a bit by Sunday. Mountain and desert slopes can expect increasing southwest and west winds, with gusts around 30-40 mph in many desert-adjacent canyons and pockets up to 45-55 mph possible near the San Gorgonio and Coachella areas tomorrow and especially Saturday evening.
What To Know For Your Plans
Morning low clouds and patchy drizzle could cut visibility and slow coastal commutes, so build in extra time for airport runs and early errands. If you are heading to the mountains or deserts, secure patio furniture and any loose outdoor gear, and use caution on exposed ridgelines during the gustier periods. No watches or warnings are in effect for San Diego County at this time, but it is a good idea to check updated forecasts before you travel.
