A mid-afternoon fire yesterday at the Bayshore Club Apartments in San Rafael tore through part of the complex and forced as many as 85 residents out of their homes, according to city firefighters. Crews arrived to find flames that had started in a storage closet and pushed into a nearby carport. No injuries were reported, but the building took a beating serious enough that officials deemed it temporarily uninhabitable.
The San Rafael Fire Department said the blaze was reported at about 2:20 PM and appears to have originated in a storage closet before spreading into the carport, according to KRON4. Investigators remained on scene into the afternoon, and city officials said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Where it happened
The fire broke out at the Bayshore Club Apartments at 550 Canal St. in San Rafael’s Canal district. The complex sits along the waterfront, and a property listing identifies the Bayshore Club at that Canal Street address, according to Apartments.com.
Damage and displacement
Firefighters estimated that up to 85 people were displaced and again stressed that no injuries were reported. They said the flames were largely confined to a relatively small section of the structure, yet the fire caused substantial damage to electrical wiring and water piping that left parts of the building temporarily uninhabitable, as reported by KRON4. Repairs are expected to be significant before residents are allowed to safely move back in.
Neighborhood context
The Canal District has seen major apartment fires in recent years. An Aug. 21, 2025 blaze at 516 Canal Street injured multiple people and displaced dozens, underscoring risks in older wooden-frame housing in the area, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. That earlier disaster drew a large mutual-aid response and triggered local sheltering efforts.
San Rafael fire investigators will continue to examine yesterday’s scene, and the property manager is expected to work with tenants and city officials on next steps. Officials said they will release additional details as inspections, assessments and repairs move forward.
