In a post on X, the York County Sheriff's Office said it has asked the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate and linked to a news release with the agency’s initial account. The post did not identify the inmate or give a cause of death, and officials said the inquiry is still in its early stages.
SLED will lead the probe
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s Investigative Services unit is the state’s go-to team for officer-involved shootings, homicides and in-custody deaths. Regional agents are assigned to examine evidence, interview detention staff and review medical records, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). Those teams operate around the clock and work with local coroners and prosecutors as needed while they piece together what happened.
Local context
The York County Detention Center has seen several similar deaths in recent years, each of them drawing outside scrutiny. The Rock Hill Herald reported on a November 2025 in-custody death that triggered a SLED investigation, and WSOC covered an earlier 2024 fatality at the jail that also led to an outside probe.
What happens next
SLED agents are expected to collect records and other evidence while working with the county coroner, as autopsy and toxicology testing move forward. Those forensic steps can take days to weeks before officials can determine the cause and manner of death. The York County government lists Sabrina Gast as coroner, and local authorities say they will release additional information as the investigation allows.
