Pennsylvania's county and community fairs are not just places to win a goldfish and a blue ribbon. A state-commissioned economic study released late last year found that these events pack a serious financial punch, generating roughly $1.1 billion in annual economic impact, drawing about 4 million visitors and sustaining thousands of jobs across rural communities. For towns that host fairs from July into the fall, fair season has become a cornerstone of tourism and local spending.

State Study Lays Out The Numbers

According to a press release from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, a report prepared by Econsult Solutions found that 107 county and local fairs produce $1.14 billion in statewide economic output, support more than 10,700 full-time jobs and generate roughly $21.3 million in state tax revenue. The analysis estimates that fairgoers spent about $673 million locally last year, with most of that money flowing into largely rural host communities. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture notes that researchers used IMPLAN input-output modeling and surveys of fair organizers and visitors to reach those conclusions.

Case Studies Show Local Impact

To show how one fair can move the economic needle, the report zooms in on a few marquee events. Bloomsburg's eight-day run was estimated to produce more than $80 million in impact, while the Great Allentown Fair accounted for roughly $62.5 million and supported more than 600 jobs. Those case studies highlight how grandstand shows, livestock competitions, vendor sales and overnight stays ripple outward into local restaurants, hotels and seasonal hiring. Pennsylvania Ag Connection and other regional outlets picked up the department's release and underscored the same numbers.

State Support And Return On Investment

State officials have been quick to point to the PA Fair Fund and recent investments as proof that relatively modest grants can deliver an outsized bang for the buck. The Econsult analysis calculates that every $1 the Commonwealth invests in county and local fairs produces about $286 in economic activity and approximately $5 in state fiscal returns. Those grants, which support capital improvements, premium reimbursements and youth programs like FFA and 4-H, are intended to help fairs upgrade infrastructure and stay viable from year to year. Econsult Solutions notes that the results reflect a combination of organizational spending and visitor spending across the fair season.
