Early Thursday morning in Smithfield, a routine shift change at an industrial plant turned into a homicide investigation after a woman was found shot to death in the parking lot and her husband was later charged with murder.
Smithfield police say officers were called around 5 a.m. to the AAF Flanders facility on Wal-Pat Road, where they found a woman with gunshot wounds in the lot. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and detectives later identified a suspect and arrested him at a Smithfield home. He is being held without bail, according to police.
As reported by The News & Observer, the victim has been identified as 39-year-old Lorena Capera Paz. Officers found her in the parking lot of AAF Flanders at 2121 Wal-Pat Road and pronounced her dead there. With the help of witnesses at the scene, detectives identified 39-year-old Jesus Bermudez as the suspect, the paper notes.
WRAL reports that Bermudez was taken into custody at his home on Galilee Road around 9 a.m. and booked into the Johnston County Detention Center. Police told the outlet they believe the shooting was an isolated incident and say there is no ongoing threat to the wider community.
Charges, penalties and next steps
According to The News & Observer, Bermudez is charged with first-degree murder and is scheduled to appear in Johnston County court on Friday, June 26, 2026.
Under North Carolina law, murder in the first degree is a Class A felony that can carry life in prison or, in certain cases, a capital sentence. The statute is outlined in G.S. 14-17.
What investigators say and what is still unknown
Authorities say they identified Bermudez with help from witnesses but have not released any information about a possible motive. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and interview potential witnesses.
WRAL notes that Bermudez and Capera Paz were married, although officials have not shared additional details about their relationship as the investigation continues.
The case remains under active investigation. Prosecutors and Smithfield police have not provided further information beyond the charges and the scheduled court appearance. This story will be updated as new court filings and official statements are released.
